It is one of the safest and most widely used forms of sedation for both adults and children. You remain awake, able to respond, and breathe on your own throughout the procedure.

What Will I Feel?
Patients commonly describe:

Before Your Appointment
- Eat a light meal 2–3 hours beforehand
- Avoid heavy or greasy food right before your visit
- Inform the clinician of any medications, allergies, or recent illnesses
- Let us know if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
During the Appointment
- A small, comfortable nosepiece will be placed.
- You’ll breathe normally as the sedation begins.
- Once you feel relaxed, treatment will start.
- Sedation levels can be increased or decreased at any time.

After the Appointment
- The sedative effect wears off within minutes of stopping the gas.
- Most patients can leave shortly after and continue daily activities.
- In rare cases you may be advised to wait slightly longer before driving—your clinician will confirm.
Is It Safe?

Nitrous oxide sedation has an excellent safety record and is suitable for the majority of patients. It is delivered by trained professionals with continuous monitoring throughout the procedure.
Contraindications / When It May Not Be Suitable
Inhalation sedation may not be recommended for:
- Severe respiratory conditions (e.g., COPD)
- Nasal congestion that prevents breathing through the nose
- Certain vitamin B₁₂ or folate deficiencies
- Pregnancy (especially the first trimester)
